Since September 2025, WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has repeatedly restricted Línea Jacarandas, a free WhatsApp health line operated by the feminist organisation Jacarandas. The most recent restriction occurred on December 10, 2025, and the line remains restricted.
Línea Jacarandas provides information on sexual and reproductive healthcare, abortion access, and support for survivors of sexual violence. The line supports around 25 women each day, including users seeking time sensitive information about abortion care, in Colombia, where abortion was decriminalised in 2022.
Jacarandas was founded by a group of young feminists following the decriminalisation of abortion in Colombia to advise women and girls on how to access free and legal abortion services.
Since September 2025, the WhatsApp line has been restricted on four separate occasions. During these restrictions, Jacarandas was forced to temporarily move the service to Telegram. Many of the women they support were unable to access the line there, resulting in a reduction in daily support, particularly for users in urgent situations.
Meta did not provide clear information about which policies were allegedly violated, citing only general references to tools not complying with its terms and conditions. Jacarandas pursued legal action to restore the line, which was later restricted again.
For many users, Línea Jacarandas serves as a critical first point of contact for accurate and practical abortion information and support.
This case forms part of a broader global pattern in which Big Tech platforms restrict abortion, reproductive health, and gender justice-related content. When these services are disrupted, entire communities lose access to information, care, safety, and support.
